It's Finally Over :( Conflict?

I finally completed my favorite childhood series. I remember being a young fifth grader and being addicted to the Gallagher Girls book series. The series is about a girl, who goes to a school of spies. Little does she know her true importance and that everything is not as it seems. There are so many betrayals, so many plot twists, and so many unexpected surprises. I really loved this series. The final book came out about two weeks ago, called United We Spy by Ally Carter. This book was such a perfect conclusion to the series and I couldn't have expected more. Its about Cammie, and her ultimate challenge as a spy. It's finally her last year of high (spy) school, but could it also be her last year alive? Throughout this book, Cammie goes through so many near death experiences that it will leave you at the edge of you're seat. I loved this book so much I finished it in about two days!

So... Conflict?

Well in this book/ series Cammie goes through a lot of troubles. Here's some, just to name a few.

1. Person vs. Person: Its Cammie vs. the Circle of Caravan. They're trying to kill her and she's trying not to let them.

2. Person vs. Self: Cammie doesn't know what she want's to me, what she wants to do after school is over. She is so lost. Her friends are going into the FBI, the M16, but will she ever figure out what she wants to be?

3. Person vs. Society: Cammie is expected to do so many things that she runs away from her expectations.

What Will Happen?!?!

So, So far in my novel, weird things have been happening. I am reading Half Upon A Time by James Riley. It's basically a twist to your normal fairy tale story, a little Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Snow White, you name it, and it’s probably there. The main character, Jack, tries hard in training to be some princess's knight in shining armor. Little does he realize that a princess will come falling out of the sky and land at his feet. Well "princess". This girl, May, doesn't realize she is a princess, and is only assumed to be one for her shirt which says, "Punk Princess" on it. She lands in an unknown world, unsure what’s happening nor of where she is. Once she gains her bearings, she, Jack, and a prince go on a search to find her Grandmother, who has been kidnapped. A strange twist is revealed, and it just shows you that everything is not what it seems.

So... Predictions?

Well I predict that...

1. Jack is from Jack and the Beanstalk (DUH. But since they never actually say it, I think it still counts as a prediction).

2. They find the grandmother, but she is taken away from them once again. ( I thought of this one because it is the first book in a SERIES so there must be some carried over plot to the next book).

3. Jack will end up being a traitor and help the "bad guys". (Maybe this is the big twist. I mean how amazing and different would that be?)

Questions?

1. Is the grandmother worth saving? ( As in is she really what she tells everyone that she is)

2. Was it pure chance that May suddenly fell into this world of fairytales, or is she somehow connected to it all?

Almost There!!!

Finally, I have come to the concluding book of Marina's Tales. The books were spectacular and everything I imagined in a book series. Seriously, the main characters were fully developed and the same people were featured in every book. You could see Marina change from innocent, to extremely aware of the world throughout the whole series, a little at a time. As I reached the concluding book, however, I realized that it didn't take me long to get addicted to the books. I read 4 books in ten days, each book with its own shocking twist. In the whole series I'd have to say that my favorite book was most definitely the last one, The Turning  Tides. This book had so much imagery and really sucked you in. A story of love, pain, and betrayal, it was impossible to put down. As a matter of fact, I finished it in one day! Well I hoped to find a fifth novel but I am disappointed to say that the series is finally over. There are so many mysteries that the reader must now imagine the end of. Well time to find a new series. If anyone has any suggestions please comment! Until next time I suppose, thanks for reading :)

Book Review Of Between the Land and Sea

Close your eyes and relax. Imagine this. You're a young girl, who lost her mother and travels around the world with her father, never leaving his side. Now imagine being ripped apart from him and being thrown into a place, into the unknown. You are received hostilely by strangers, just because you're aunt showers you with gifts, making you seem rich. You are welcomed into the arms of almost strangers, people you remember meeting once long ago. You are taken from you’re father, never knowing when you are going to see him next. This is the exact situation Mariana finds herself in, in the beginning of the book.

The author of this novel really made you think, made you imagine, and almost made you feel like you were the main character. She used much of imagery so you could almost see, feel, hear, taste and smell exactly what Marina was feeling. The book is very, very well written and has an amazing story plot.

As I said above, Marina finds herself in a much unknown situation. But being who she is, she makes the best of it. The rest of this novel is about a girl, who finds out about a mysterious family secret, and how she figures out who she really is.

I give this book 4.5 out of 5. This is because the story was very well written and it also had a new and original plot line. It made me never want to put it down and it also makes me want to re-read it multiple times. However, I thought that it was a little slow in the beginning.

Overall it is a great novel and I recommend it to all girls above the age of 12. It was a fun,, fantasy read that had a twist in every page. I strongly recommend it to those who enjoy fantasy.

Theme in Between the Land and the Sea

What is theme really? I know we've been learning about it in class, but what makes it so difficult to understand, to identify? Well in reality, I believe the theme is not really what the author chooses, but what the reader chooses to take out of the book. I believe it's the reader's choice to take out a theme from the book, it may or may not be what the author wanted.
So theme is really what you choose to take out of a book. While reading Between the Land and the Sea I didn't really think it would be something I would take something out of. I believed it was something for pleasure, just a fantasy novel that I wouldn't be able to relate to real life. Well was I wrong!

Between the Land and the Sea was a fantastic novel! It is a fantasy book with mythological creatures, mostly around mermaids. A girl feels a connection to the ocean in a town that she never wanted to be in and finds her true self, and true love. Marina, the main character in the novel, is told to go live without her dad for the first time in her life, and to live in a small sea side town with her aunt Abby and cousin Cruz. Although she misses her dad she grows to love her Aunt and Cousin. Little does she know that she will fall in love very soon with someone who, well, she never thought she would fall in love with. However, her happily ever after life is soon taken from her. She learns a dark secret about her family and learns about who she really is. What is so admirable is how she takes it, how she understands it, and how she accepts it.

So the theme in this novel is to be true to yourself. To be true to who you are and not to let anyone affect you, or change the real you.

This shows that she was proud to be who she is. She embraces that she is a "freak" but she doesn't care. Why? Because that is who she is, and because she is proud to be who she is. This is such a good theme for a book. Everyone should accept who they are and be happy about themselves. They should feel proud to be themselves, and I am happy that I got this theme out of the novel.

Characterization in Firelight

Firelight Characters

As I continued through the story of Jacinda, I realised just how much she changed. After reading Firelight, I continued the series to read Vanish, an amazing read. Jacinda's story is continued and she begins to show tremendous change.

In the beginning of Firelight, Jacinda is very accepting of her fate. Although she does break a few rules, she does not fight her fate, though she does complain about it. She is about conformity and being like the other Draki. When Jacinda's mom whisks her away to another place, Jacinda argues. Even though she knows all the things that are wrong with the pride, she wishes to stay. Why? Because this is all she knows and she doesn't want it to leave it for something she doesn't know. This is shown in the quotes...
"I'm the only one that feels connected to the pride. The one who will suffer if we leave," (Jordan 31)
"Suddenly I want to pretend everything is right with our life here. I want to forget about my unease with Severin's dictatorship of the pride. I want to forget Cassian's possessive gaze. Forget my sister's sense of isolation in a community that treats her like a leper and forget the guilt I've always felt about that," (Jordan 32).
This shows how much she is willing to forget, in order to stay where she is and not change a thing.

However as the story goes on, Jacinda changes dramatically. At first, her relationship with her sister is a little strained, as Jacinda always got more of the attention. However, as soon as they move, her and her sister get closer because in the human world, they are both equal. Her and her mom, however, have a more strained relationship due to the fact that Jacinda never really forgives her for making her move from the "Home" she's always known.

As Jacinda continues to meet more people, she continues to change. Suddenly, she's challenging the status quo, and fighting for what she wants. She meets her "special someone" who also happens to be one of her most feared enemies, the hunters. She fights to be with him, yet she also fights herself to stay away. She knows that getting to close to a hunter could prove to be disastrous to Draki everywhere.

Yet, she continues to love him but also fights to keep her Draki identity a secret. This is a tremendous change. She puts herself out there, and takes on the world. She fights not to lose who she is and fights what she is supposed to become. She throws away the idea that her fate is already decided for her and decides her own future. She lives up to who she really is, and fights to become her true self.

All this shows that Jacinda is a dynamic and static charecter. She is effectively described throughout the whole novel and changes a lot too. Thanks for Reading!

 

Book Review of Firelight

Book Review of Firelight

Firelight is an extremely extraordinary and unique novel. I've never read anything like it and it kept me in suspense. It is a fantasy novel for those who enjoy fantasy and is very quick paced. It always kept me on edge. I recommend it for anyone and everyone. If I was to give it a rate out of 5, I would give it a 4.This is mainly because of the fact that it did have a few romantic parts that I did not enjoy very much. But overall it was a GREAT book and I recommend that everyone should read it.

It starts out with a girl who is always on top. Being the only fire breather in generations, she is greatly celebrated and gains enormous popularity.  She is a descendent of the dragons and has the ability to morph into one when she chooses. However, attempting to break way from her "pride" she takes flight and breaks the rules. She gets caught by the hunters and is in a sticky life or death situation. Miraculously she survives and the rest of the story is about how she runs away from the "pride" and learns a few more things about the real her, as well as those who hunt her kind.

Like I said it is a GREAT book and I recommend it to everyone!
